The resurrection of Jesus overlaps with Christ the King Sunday in Year D. I like that liturgical year.
The power of God, in whom we need to rely, is a theme present in the assigned readings. This power is evident in Jesus; that is no surprise. Furthermore, all temporal substitutes for God–geography, international alliances, et cetera–are woefully inadequate.
The fear of certain Pharisees in John 12:19b is

If only that were true! I am not oblivious to reality; I do not mistake superficial observance for discipleship. I also know that, overall, the rate of discipleship in the Western world is declining. An accurate reading of U.S. history reveals the fact that a substantial proportion of the population has always been non-observant. Nevertheless, the current situation is not a return to historical patterns. One can make similar generalizations about other parts of the Western world. Nevertheless, I am optimistic; God is in charge and no human resistance or indifference can halt the spread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

All of the options for the Gospel reading leave Jesus dead in a borrowed tomb. This is the situation on the penultimate Sunday of Year D. This makes liturgical sense, for the last Sunday of the church year is the Feast of Christ the King.
The other readings assigned for Proper 28 provide the promise of better things to come. Psalm 77 speaks of the mighty acts of God in the context of a dire situation. The apocalyptic Zechariah 12:1-13:1 promises the victory of God. Nahum 3:1-19 deals with the overthrow of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, marked by violence and hubris. Finally, the triumph of Jesus in his resurrection is evident in the readings from the Pauline epistles.
One should trust in God, who is powerful, trustworthy, and compassionate.

Romans 13:1-7 is a troublesome passage. Should one always submit to government? Some of my heroes from the past include those who helped slaves escape to freedom in violation of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 and sheltered Jews or helped them escape in defiance of the Third Reich. Besides, merely obeying law is what Kohlberg called Conventional Morality, which is not the highest form of morality on that scale, nor should it be.
Anyhow, reading Romans 13:1-7 on the same day with the crucifixion of Jesus seems ironic.
The readings, taken together, point toward mercy. Even the judgment of God, as in Nahum 2:1-13, exists in the context of mercy for the rescued. The mighty acts of God also testify to mercy. And the death of Jesus does too. One should, of course, complete that story with the resurrection, or else one will have a dead Jesus perpetually. Sometimes mercy requires defiance of civil authority; so be it.

The holy mountain in Ezekiel 20 is where the restoration of Israel will become manifest. The hill of Golgotha is where Roman soldiers executed an innocent man. One would be hard pressed to identify two hills more different from each other.
The example of Jesus Christ, who did not think of himself, is one of, among other things, love, self-sacrifice, service, humility, and forgiveness. The Psalms appointed for this Sunday fit well with the theme of the crucifixion of Jesus except for the animosity present in the speakers’ voices. The example of Jesus is challenging. It commands each one of us to take up his or her cross and follow him.

This is a seemingly odd set of readings for the Feast of All Saints. One of the purposes of Timothy Matthew Slemmons in proposing Year D as a supplement to the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) is to include passages the RCL overlooks, so that makes sense.
Trusting in God, who is faithful, seems to be the unifying theme of the assigned readings. The inclusion of the crucifixion, death, and burial of Jesus, according to Matthew 27, is consistent with the Passion narrative, with which Slemmons surrounds this feast in his reading plan. That inclusion also supports the point about the fidelity of God. Related to divine faithfulness in the human obligation to respond with fidelity. Grace, which makes this possible, is free yet not cheap; it requires much of one.
Saints come in two varieties: those whom at least one ecclesiastical authority recognizes and those who receive no such recognition. In the New Testament the definition of a saint is an observant Christian. Consider the saints who have influenced you positively, O reader. Thank God for them. Furthermore, may you be such a saint in the lives of others.

Judgment and mercy relate to each other in the readings for this Sunday. Divine judgment and mercy coexist in Nahum 1, with judgment falling on the Neo-Assyrian Empire. The two factors also coexist in Psalm 33, but with the emphasis on mercy. Psalm 33, in the context of the readings from the Gospels and Romans 10 and 11, seems ironic, for rejection of Jesus does not fit with
Happy is the nation whose God is the LORD!
happy is the people he has chosen to be his own.
–Psalm 33:12, The Book of Common Prayer (1979)
The options for the Gospel reading bring us to the verge of the crucifixion of Jesus, who was, of course, innocent of any offense (in the eyes of God), especially one that any Roman imperial official would consider worthy of crucifixion. To kill a person that way was to make an example of him, to extinguish him, and to convince (via fear) anyone from doing what he had done or had allegedly done. It was a form of execution usually reserved for criminals such as insurrectionists. The fact of the crucifixion of Jesus actually reveals much about the perception of Jesus by certain people.
Jesus was a threat to the religious establishment at a place and in a time when the separation of religion and state did not exist. He was not an insurrectionist, however. He was a revolutionary though. He was a revolutionary who continues to threaten human institutions and social norms by calling their morality into question.
Attempts to domesticate Jesus are nothing new. We can, however, access the undomesticated Jesus via the Gospels.

The assigned readings, taken together, focus on the contrast between the justice of God and the injustice of human political and economic systems. When God destroys corrupt human systems, a better order replaces them. In the Gospels Jesus becomes a scapegoat whom St. Simon Peter denies knowing. The options for the Psalm fit the mood of Holy Week well, with the major exceptions of the confession of sin in Psalm 38 and the vengeful desire in Psalm 55.
To write or speak of the Kingdom of God and how it differs from human social norms and institutions is to, among other things, to criticize human social norms and institutions. To do so, when one dies it properly, is to contemplate one’s complicity in collective sin. That would lead to repentance, or turning one’s back on sin. That can, when enough people do it, lead to social reform. After all, society is people.
May we not deny Christ as he is present among us in the victims of injustice.

The reality of the Temple at the time of Jesus was a far cry from the prediction of what the Temple would become, according to Haggai 2:10-19. The Second Temple, which Herod the Great had ordered expanded, had become the seat of collaboration with the Romans. Many Jews attended events at the Temple faithfully, but they did so under the watchful gazes of Roman soldiers at the fortress next door. In this context the annual commemoration of the Passover–of God’s deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt–occurred.
The law of God is good, but abuses of it are bad. Among these abuses was the crucifixion of Jesus, the judicial killing of a scapegoat. That event is still in the future–albeit the near future–in the assigned readings from the Gospels. Nevertheless, this is not too early to notice the contrast between the forgiving attitude of Jesus and the vengeful author of Psalm 3. Forgiveness is, of course, the best policy.

The First Temple at Jerusalem–when it was new and after it had become ruins–occupies the focus in the two options for the First Reading. God–in the Ark of the Covenant–was present there, faith affirmed. With that faith came the obligation to, in the words of Psalm 41, consider the poor and the needy. This was part of the covenant most of the population disregarded, to its detriment. Consistent with that ethic of caring for the poor and the needy was the example of Jesus, who modeled the teaching that the way to true greatness is servanthood.
As for the readings from the epistles, I must make some critical (in the highest sense of that word) comments about them. They do contain some sexism, but not as much as some think. The texts do speak of the responsibilities of husbands toward their wives, after all. The overall portrait is one of a high degree of mutuality. Also, the failure to condemn slavery disturbs me. That failure is a recurring theme in Christian history, from the first century to at least the nineteenth century. Christianity need not mean default contrariness, for not everything in society is wrong, but the Christian Gospel ought to lead one to oppose servitude and sexism. The Gospel is, after all, about liberation–freedom to serve God without the societal constraints foreign to God.

The thanksgiving for divine mercy in Psalm 136 and the teaching about domestic love and respect (including some awkward sexism and the lack of a condemnation of slavery) contrast with the predicted betrayal of Jesus in John 13. The gratitude to God in Psalm 136 also stands in contrast to the criticized attitude in Haggai 1. Some people, having departed Babylon for their ancestral home and settled there, have built new houses yet oppose rebuilding the Temple. God insists that not only has the time to rebuild the Temple come, but it has arrived already. The matter is one of respect.
If we respect God as we ought, we will want to behave in certain ways, including the care of houses of worship and the treatment of our fellow human beings. We will even oppose slavery and stand against the execution of the innocent.
