The author of Psalm 32 had guilt and sin with which to deal. The fictional character of Job, however, did not suffer because of any sin he had committed, according to Chapters 1 and 2. Eliphaz the Temanite did not grasp this reality, so he uttered pious-sounding statements (some of which echo certain Psalms and much of the Book of Proverbs), pestering (not consoling) Job, who felt isolated from the mystery he labeled God. Job was terrified of God (as he should have been, given God’s conduct throughout the book, especially Chapters 1, 2, 38, 39, 40, and 41) and was honest about his feelings. Eliphaz, in contrast, offered an easy and false answer to a difficult question.
Yes, some suffering flows from one’s sinful deeds and functions as discipline, but much suffering does not. Consider the life of Jesus of Nazareth, O reader. He suffered greatly, even to the point of death, but not because he had sinned. Much of the time our suffering results from the sins of other people. On other occasions we suffer for no apparent reason other than that we are at the wrong place at the wrong time or we have a pulse.
May we resist the temptation to peddle in easy and false answers to difficult questions. May we seek not to be correct but to be compassionate, to live according to love for God and our fellow human beings.

The pericope from Exodus 22 comes from a section of the Law of Moses regarding offenses against property. One reads of restitution again and again. Unfortunately, women count as property, as they do in the Ten Commandments, just two chapters earlier.
The author of the Letter to the Hebrews argued that the new covenant in Jesus, simultaneously blameless victim and eternal high priest, is superior to the old system, with its animal sacrifices. The new covenant, the author wrote, is available to Jews and Gentiles alike, for, as St. Simon Peter said in Acts 10:34b-35 (The New Revised Standard Version, 1989):
I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.
Women are people, not property. Jesus, simultaneously spotless victim and eternal high priest, does what mortal priests cannot do. Sometimes the new is superior to the old.

The Book of Proverbs has a hit-or-miss quality when I read from it. Sometimes passages are overly optimistic, as in the statement that children, once they learn the proper path, will not stray from it. Other passages seem banal. This fact might indicate more about me than the texts in question; so be it. Today’s section, however, falls into the “hit” side of “hit-or-miss.” I detect three main points of advice:
- Have a well-reasoned plan for work,
- Follow it, and
- Be honest.
The third point applies to the pericope from John 5. Many opponents of our Lord and Savior told lies about him as part of an effort which led to his execution. Thus they protected their own status, which Jesus, by his mere presence, threatened. Before they lied to others, however, they deceived themselves partially and decided not to follow him. They knew that Jesus was no charlatan, but they acted as they did. And they did so in the name of God.
Sometimes we sin in ignorance. We think we know what we are doing, but we really do not. On other occasions, however, we know exactly what we are doing. In the case of our Lord and Savior’s opponents, they were scapegoating a man and protecting their socio-economic-political status. They were looking out for number one and defending the status quo ante by means of deception and eventually violence.
Do we know what we are doing when we sin against God and each other each time? Of course not! But, regardless of the status of our knowledge, grace is available to us. Both judgment and mercy abide in the nature of God. Also relevant are the decisions we make ultimately, for our free will plays a part in the drama of our salvation (unless, of course, we are among those God has predestined to Heaven) or damnation. Grace precedes us, walks beside us, carries us sometimes, and succeeds us. Dare we reject it?

Women and children were among the most vulnerable members of our Lord’s society. Widows and orphans especially at risk. Thus in Matthew 19:1-15, Jesus affirmed the dignity of women and children and the importance of commitments. Some men divorced their wives for casual reasons, thereby placing the divorced women at great risk of falling through the cracks of society. And, as Richard Horsley has taught me, some Pharisees permitted elites to divorce and remarry for reasons of consolidating control over land and other resources. (Source = Jesus and Empire: The Kingdom of God and the New World Disorder, Minneapolis, MN: Fortress Press, 2003, page 122). Jesus frowned upon people making a mockery of solemn commitments to God and each other.
Children were powerless. So Jesus, of course, spoke highly of such socially invisible people. The man who dined with notorious sinners, spoke at length about profound topics with women, and scandalized the defenders and guardians of ritual purity codes said:
Let the children come to me; do not try to stop them, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these.

Welcome, O reader, to the Kingdom of God, where the meek inherit the earth, the hungry eat, the thirsty drink, and the powerless and socially invisible people are role models. This is consistent with the best of the Law of Moses and the commandments of God in our mouths and hearts.

From Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all God’s people at Philippi, who are incorporate in Christ Jesus, with the bishops and deacons.
Grace to you and peace from our God and Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I thank my God every time I think of you; whenever I pray for you, my prayers are always joyful, because of the part you have taken in the work of the gospel from the first day until now. Of this I am confident, that he who who started the good work in you will bring it to completion by the day of Christ Jesus. It is only natural that I should feel like this about you, because I have great affection for you, knowing that, both while I am kept in prison and when I am called on to defend the truth of the gospel, you all share in this privilege of mine. God knows how I long for you with the deep yearning of Christ Jesus himself. And this is my prayer, that your love may grow ever richer in knowledge and insight of every kind, enabling you to learn by experience what things really matter. Then on the day of Christ you will be flawless and without blame, yielding the full harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
My friends, I want you to understand that the progress of the gospel has actually been helped by what has happened to me. It has become common knowledge throughout the imperial guard, and indeed among the public at large, that my imprisonment is in Christ’s cause; and my being in prison has given most of our fellow-Christians confidence to speak the word of God fearlessly and with extraordinary courage.
Some, it is true, proclaim Christ in a jealous and quarrelsome spirit, but some jealous and do it in goodwill. These are moved by love, knowing that it is to defend the gospel that I am where I am; the others are moved by selfish ambition and present Christ from mixed motives, meaning to cause me distress as I lie in prison. What does it matter? One way or another, whether sincerely or not, Christ is proclaimed; and for that I rejoice.
Yes, and I shall go on rejoicing; for I know well that the issue will be my deliverance, because you are praying for me and the Spirit of Jesus Christ is given me for support. It is my confident hope that nothing will daunt me or prevent me from speaking boldly; and that now as always Christ will display his greatness in me, whether the verdict be life or death. For to me life is Christ, and death is gain. If I am to go on living in the body there is fruitful work for me to do. Which then am I to choose? I cannot tell. I am pulled two ways: my own desire is to depart and be with Christ–that is better by far; but for your sake the greater need is for me to remain in the body. This convinces me: I am sure I shall remain, and stand by you all to ensure your progress and joy in the faith, so that on my account you may have even more cause for pride in Christ Jesus–through seeing me restored to you.
Whatever happens, let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether or not I come and see you for myself I may hear that you are standing firm, united in spirit and in mind, side by side in the struggle to advance the gospel faith, meeting your opponents without so much as a tremor. This is a sure sign to them that destruction is in store for them and salvation for you, a sign from God himself; for you have been granted the privilege not only of believing in Christ but also of suffering for him. Your conflict is the same as mine; once you saw me in it, and now you hear I am in it still.

Paul wrote the Letter to the Philippians; there is no reasonable doubt about that fact. The date of composition was no earlier than 52 and no later than 62 C.E., and the setting of the writing was a prison. Philippi was a major city in what is now Greece. Located on a major east-west road, its site was strategic. The church there faced some problems, notably persecution as well as dissention sown by Judaizers and proto-Gnostics. Such lack of unity in the face of persecution was troublesome.
Some scholars think that this epistle might actually be two letters mashed up. If so, this is not the only such case in Pauline literature, for scholars have detected the same issue in Corinthian epistles. Indeed, St. Polycarp, the Bishop of Smyrna martyred in 156 C.E., wrote his own epistle to the Philippian church. He referred to the Pauline letters to that community:
Not that I should be taking on myself to write to you in this way about the life of holiness, my brothers, if you yourselves had not invited me to do so. For I am as far as anyone else of my sort from having the wisdom of our blessed and glorious Paul. During his residence with you he gave the men of those days clear and sound instruction in the word of truth, while he was there in person among them; and even after his departure he still sent letters which, if you study them attentively, will enable you to make progress in the faith which was delivered to you. Faith is the mother of us all; with Hope following in her train, and Love of God and Christ and neighbour leading the way. Let a man’s mind be wholly bent on these, and he has fulfilled all the demands of holiness; for to possess Love is to be beyond the reach of sin.–Early Christian Writings: The Apostolic Fathers, Translated by Maxwell Staniforth; Translation revised by Andrew Louth (Penguin Books, 1987), page 120
I have preserved the unity of Chapter 1. The scope of the chapter becomes apparent this way but would be lost by breaking it into two sections, per the lectionary. I have examined the whole chapter closely and fixated on Paul’s tone; he, although in prison, rejoices. He suffers for Christ and considers this a privilege, one in which the Philippian Christians share. Paul rejoices because he is in Christ.
Paul had come to occupy a spiritual plane I have yet to encounter. Reading about saints and pouring over the writings of saints encourages me to persevere more and to whine less often. Those great men and women of the faith have experienced hardships worse than mine and/or dealt successfully with struggles more daunting than mine. If they can keep the faith, so can I.
Our journey through the Letter to the Philippians has begun. I plan to type every word of the epistle, an exercise which will bring me into close contact with that text. We will resume with Monday in the Week of Proper 26, Year 2.

Romans 8:1-11 (Revised English Bible):
It follows that there is now no condemnation for those who are united with Christ Jesus. In Christ Jesus the life-giving law of the Spirit has set you free from the law of sin and death. What the law could not do, because human weakness robbed it of all potency, God has done: by sending his own Son in the likeness of our sinful nature and to deal with sin, he has passed judgement against sin within that very nature, so that the commandment of the law may find fulfillment in us, whose conduct is no longer controlled by the old nature, but by the Spirit.
Those who live on the level of the old nature have their outlook formed by it, and that spells death; but those who live on the level of the spirit have the spiritual outlook, and that is life and peace. For the outlook of the unspiritual nature is enmity with God; it is not subject to the law of God and indeed it cannot be; those who live under its control cannot please God.
But you do not live like that. You live by the spirit, since God’s Spirit dwells in you; and anyone who does not possess the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then although the body is dead because of sin, yet the Spirit is your life because you have been justified. Moreover, if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, then the God who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give new life to your mortal bodies through his indwelling Spirit.
Psalm 24:1-6 (1979 Book of Common Prayer):
1 The earth is the LORD’s and all that is in it,
the world and all who dwell therein.
2 For it is he who founded it upon the seas
and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep.
3 “Who can ascend to the hill of the LORD?
and who can stand in his holy place?”
4 “Those who have clean hands and a pure heart,
who have not pledged themselves to falsehood,
nor sworn by what is a fraud.
5 They shall receive a blessing from the LORD
and a just reward from the God of their salvation.”
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.
Luke 13:1-9 (Revised English Bible):
At that time some people came and told him [Jesus] about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. He answered them:
Do you suppose that, because these Galileans suffered this fate, they must have been greater sinners than anyone else in Galilee? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all of you come to the same end. Of the eighteen people who were killed when the tower fell on them at Siloam–do you imagine they must have been more guilty than all the other people living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all come to an end like theirs.
He told them this parable:
A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it, but found none. So he said to the vine-dresser, “For the last three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree without finding any. Cut it down. Why should it go on taking goodness from the soil?” But he replied, “Leave it, sir, for this one year, while I did round it and manure it. And it it bears next season, well and good; if not, you shall have it down.”

The Collect:
Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The passage from Luke contains a historical reference which requires explanation. Pontius Pilate, the Roman imperial Procurator in the region, had decided to finance improvements to the Jerusalem water supply infrastructure with Temple monies. A riot ensued, as did the predictable violence of Roman soldiers with orders to suppress the uprising. A common idea at the time assumed that those who died must have been greater sinners than the rest, for such a terrible fate befell them but not others. Jesus rejected this automatic link between sin and suffering. Apparently he had paid close attention to the Book of Job.
The writing of the Gospel of Luke occurred circa 85-90 C.E., within recent memory of the First Jewish War and the destruction of Jerusalem and Herod’s Temple. This historical fact must inform our interpretation of this passage, as that reality influenced its writing. Presumably the message was that those who had rejected Jesus and the Christian message after his crucifixion and Resurrection suffered the wrath of God–a wrath they had a chance to avoid.
Such ancient logic lends itself too easily to hatred of the Jews, and I reject Anti-Semitism.
The non-Anti-Semitic takeaway from Luke 13:1-9 common to Romans 8:1-11 is that God has given us second, third, fourth, et cetera chances. To the extent that we have life, that is in and through God–notably Jesus and the Holy Spirit. This changes our way of understanding the world. It changes mine. I consider my response to the death of Osama bin Laden. Yes, the man was a mass murderer and a terrorist, but would Jesus rejoice at the man’s death? No, I think not; so I cannot rejoice at it either.
Yet I know that there is much room left for personal transformation within me. May it continue.
We see also in this day’s readings the conjunction of mercy and judgment. As I have written before in other blogs, one is meaningless without the other. That is a sobering thought. Yet let us leave vengeance to God, with whom there is also extravagant mercy.

may we not imprison ourselves in the past,
dwelling on disappointments and plotting revenge
or resting on our laurels.
Instead, may we learn the appropriate lessons from the past,
live in the present faithfully, and
look to the future faithfully.
May we be and remain open to
all the possibilities you present for us to fulfill our vocations.
And, in so doing, may we become the persons we need to become
–for your glory and the sake others.

Sovereign God,
I confess that I have sought control in matters small, medium, and large.
This has been a recurring, unfortunate, and sinful pattern.
Why have I not learned better that human control is purely illusory?
Why am I stubborn in this sin?
Deliver me–deliver all of us–I pray you–from this sin,
so that trust in you may replace the idolatrous quest for control,
that love for you and all your children may abound,
and that Shalom may result.
