The assigned readings, taken together, focus on the contrast between the justice of God and the injustice of human political and economic systems. When God destroys corrupt human systems, a better order replaces them. In the Gospels Jesus becomes a scapegoat whom St. Simon Peter denies knowing. The options for the Psalm fit the mood of Holy Week well, with the major exceptions of the confession of sin in Psalm 38 and the vengeful desire in Psalm 55.
To write or speak of the Kingdom of God and how it differs from human social norms and institutions is to, among other things, to criticize human social norms and institutions. To do so, when one dies it properly, is to contemplate one’s complicity in collective sin. That would lead to repentance, or turning one’s back on sin. That can, when enough people do it, lead to social reform. After all, society is people.
May we not deny Christ as he is present among us in the victims of injustice.

The reality of the Temple at the time of Jesus was a far cry from the prediction of what the Temple would become, according to Haggai 2:10-19. The Second Temple, which Herod the Great had ordered expanded, had become the seat of collaboration with the Romans. Many Jews attended events at the Temple faithfully, but they did so under the watchful gazes of Roman soldiers at the fortress next door. In this context the annual commemoration of the Passover–of God’s deliverance of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt–occurred.
The law of God is good, but abuses of it are bad. Among these abuses was the crucifixion of Jesus, the judicial killing of a scapegoat. That event is still in the future–albeit the near future–in the assigned readings from the Gospels. Nevertheless, this is not too early to notice the contrast between the forgiving attitude of Jesus and the vengeful author of Psalm 3. Forgiveness is, of course, the best policy.

The First Temple at Jerusalem–when it was new and after it had become ruins–occupies the focus in the two options for the First Reading. God–in the Ark of the Covenant–was present there, faith affirmed. With that faith came the obligation to, in the words of Psalm 41, consider the poor and the needy. This was part of the covenant most of the population disregarded, to its detriment. Consistent with that ethic of caring for the poor and the needy was the example of Jesus, who modeled the teaching that the way to true greatness is servanthood.
As for the readings from the epistles, I must make some critical (in the highest sense of that word) comments about them. They do contain some sexism, but not as much as some think. The texts do speak of the responsibilities of husbands toward their wives, after all. The overall portrait is one of a high degree of mutuality. Also, the failure to condemn slavery disturbs me. That failure is a recurring theme in Christian history, from the first century to at least the nineteenth century. Christianity need not mean default contrariness, for not everything in society is wrong, but the Christian Gospel ought to lead one to oppose servitude and sexism. The Gospel is, after all, about liberation–freedom to serve God without the societal constraints foreign to God.

Proper 19 is, in the Year D plan by Timothy Matthew Slemmons, the first of 10 Sundays over which the Passion Narrative stretches out. Passion, in this context, refers to suffering.
The readings, taken together, present a contrast between love and perfidy. Love manifests itself by caring for others selflessly and by seeking the common good. Love is self-sacrificial. Love does not care about maintaining appearances of respectability. Love endures, but hatred and perfidy fade away, having done their worst. This is a timeless lesson–one which might seem counterintuitive during dark times. After all, evil people prosper and retain their positions of authority and/or influence while righteous people suffer, sometimes to the point of martyrdom. This is a matter of perspective. God sees the big picture over time, but we see a much smaller portion of time.
We will do well to trust in God.

The reading from Second Zechariah is an allegory of a selfish and foolish shepherd who, instead of protecting the sheep of his flock, sells them to their slaughterer for the sum of thirty shekels of silver. The identification of the shepherd (code for political leader) is open-ended, and the price for which he sells the sheep of his flock to their doom is the same amount Judas Iscariot went on to receive for betraying Jesus in Matthew 26:14-16. One might surmise correctly that many members of Matthew’s audience, being Jews familiar with their scriptural heritage, would have recognized the echo of Zechariah 11.
Perhaps Second Zechariah was thinking of monarchs such as Jehoiakim (reigned 608-598 B.C.E.), of whom one can read in Jeremiah 22:13-19, 2 Kings 23:36-24:7, and 2 Chronicles 36:5-8, and of his son, Jeconiah/Jehoiachin (reigned 597 B.C.E.), of whom one can read in Jeremiah 22:20-30, 2 Kings 24:8-17, and 2 Chronicles 36:9-10. Jehoiachin was the penultimate King of Judah, and, by the time of his deposition by a foreign potentate, the realm Kingdom of Judah was obviously independent in name only.
Of Jehoiakim, father of Jehoiachin, Jeremiah 22 says in part:
Woe to him who builds his house on wrong,
his terraces on injustice;
Who works his neighbor without pay,
and gives him no wages.
Who says, “I will build myself a spacious house,
with airy rooms,”
Who cuts out windows for it,
panels it with cedar,
and paints it with vermillion.

Such shepherds abound, unfortunately. I refer not to those who strive to do the right thing for their populations yet fail to accomplish their goals, but to those to operate not out of any sense of seeking the common good but out of greed, self-aggrandisement, and indifference toward justice, especially that of the economic variety.
Among the most familiar images of Jesus in the Gospels is that of the Good Shepherd (John 10:1-21), who not only watches his flock attentively but lays down his life for it. The Good Shepherd is the polar opposite of the shepherd in Zechariah 11. The Good Shepherd is Jesus in 1 Peter 1 and the figure who points to powerless children as spiritual models in Luke 18. The Good Shepherd is one consistent with the description of God in Psalm 46.
To be a sheep in the flock of the Good Shepherd is wonderful indeed.

Each of the four canonical Gospels contains an account of a woman anointing Jesus–Matthew 26:6-13, Mark 14:3-9, Luke 7:36-50, and John 12:1-8. The versions are sufficiently similar to indicate that they are variations on the same event yet different enough to disagree on certain details, such as chronology, at whose house the anointing happened, which part of his body the woman anointed, and the woman’s background. These factors tell me that something occurred, but the divergence among the written accounts means that I have no way of knowing exactly what transpired in objective reality. None of that changes one iota of the spiritual value of the stories, however.
In the Matthew account our Lord and Savior, about to die, is a the home of one Simon the leper in Bethany. We know nothing about the woman’s background, not even her name. In the Gospel of Luke she is an unnamed and repentant sinner, in the Gospel of John she is St. Mary of Bethany, and in the Gospel of Mark she is also an unnamed woman of whose background we know nothing. The importance of her–whoever she was–act was that unselfish love and gratitude motivated it. This was an extravagant and beautiful deed. Yes, the poor will always be with us; that is an unfortunate reality. May, through the creation of more opportunities for advancement, there be as little poverty as possible. But, as we strive for that goal, may we never fail to recognize and give proper attention to lavish kindness, love, and gratitude.
The woman (whoever she was) had a good attitude and a pure motivation. Most of the assigned readings for these days, however, speak of people who did not. Their memorials were wastelands and periods of exile. The woman’s legacy is an honored one, however. Her act, as extravagant as it was, was as nothing compared to what God has done, is doing, and will do for all of us. Even the most lavish act of gratitude–beautiful, to be sure, is inadequate, but God accepts it graciously.

The Prophet Jeremiah relayed advice from God to those exiled from the Kingdom of Judah to Chaldea in 597 BCE: Get on with life. The wicked will perish, a faithful remnant will see divine deliverance, and the rebuilding of Jerusalem will occur. None of the members of the original audience lived to see that day, but it did come to pass.
Jeremiah prophesied during dark days which preceded even darker ones. “Dark days which preceded even darker ones” summarized the setting of the Matthew readings accurately. But, after the darker days came and went wondrously and blessedly brighter ones arrived.
I know firsthand of the sting of perfidy and of the negative consequences of actions of well-intentioned yet mistaken people. Sometimes anger is essential to surviving in the short term. Yet anger poisons one’s soul after remaining too long. Slipping into vengeful thoughts feels natural.
O daughter of Babylon, doomed to destruction,
happy the one who repays you
for all you have done to us;
Who takes your little ones,
and dashes them against the rock.

Yet such an attitude obstructs the path one must trod when getting on with life and remaining faithful to God therein. Leaving one’s enemies and adversaries to God for mercy or judgment (as God decides) and getting on with the daily business of living is a great step of faithfulness.

Thereupon the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a meeting of the Council. “This man is performing many signs,” they said, “and what action are we taking?” If we let him to on like this the whole populace will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and sweep away our temple and our nation.” But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said, “You have no grasp of the situation at all; you do not realize that is more to your interest that one man should die for the people, than that the whole nation should be destroyed.”

Eliakim, son of King Josiah, was the brother of King Jehoahaz (a.k.a. Shallum), who reigned for about three months in 609 BCE. But the Pharaoh of Egypt deposed Jehoahaz/Shallum and replaced him with Eliakim, renamed Jehoiakim, who reigned for about eleven years (608-598 BCE). Judah was under foreign domination, as 2 Kings 23:31-24:7 describes.
This was the context of the readings from Jeremiah 25 and 26: Judah was flung between Egypt and Chaldea then under a solely Chaldean threat. Jeremiah understood this as divine judgment–one which would, in time, turn on the agents of that judgment. And agents of the puppet government tried to have the prophet executed for alleged treason.
Jeremiah survived that threat but Jesus went on to die. The Gospel of John contexualizes the moment well: Jesus was about to become a scapegoat. Yet the perfidious plan of the high priest and others failed. Not only did Jesus rise from the dead, but Roman forces did destroy Jerusalem, the Temple, and the nation in 70 CE, a generation later. But I am getting ahead of the story in Matthew 26.
Jesus, surrounded by Apostles, all of whom would abandon him shortly and one of whom betrayed him immediately, faced mighty forces determined to kill him. They succeeded–for a few days.
So our eyes wait upon the Lord our God,
until he have mercy upon us.
Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
for we have had more than enough of contempt.
Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of the arrogant,
and of thee contempt of the proud.

Many Bible stories have unhappy endings. Jeremiah, for example, died in exile. Jesus did suffer greatly, but his story had a happy conclusion in the chronological, past-tense narrative. The ultimate end of that tale remains for the future, however. One bit of tissue which connects the Old and New Testament lections today is that tension, reflected in some of the appointed Psalms, between confidence in God and the absence of divine comfort and deliverance in the present tense. It is a tension I do not presume to attempt to resolve all too conveniently and falsely. The good and evil suffer. The good and the evil prosper. Sometimes deliverance does not occur on our schedule. Other times it never happens. This is reality.

The author of Psalm 62, in the context of persecution because of his holiness, wrote:
Yet be still my soul, and wait for God:
from whom comes my hope of deliverance.

I detect echoes of the Jeremiah and Matthew readings in the Psalms appointed for today. The above quote is just one example of that.
Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, fulfilled his unpleasant duty faithfully while arguing with God. The prophet announced doom for idolatry and a host of social injustices–in short, breaking the covenant with God, per Deuteronomy 30:15-20. The prophet placed himself in harm’s way by doing this. He likened himself to a docile sheep led to the slaughter and asked God to avenge him.
That image of a lamb led to the slaughter is one which Christian tradition has applied to Jesus, although he was hardly docile in Matthew 24 and elsewhere. Our Lord and Savior was far from docile in Matthew 21 (“the Temple Incident,” as New Testament scholars call it) or in John 18 or in Matthew 26. Yet the image of a lamb, when applied to Jesus, works well, for he was both the high priest and the sacrificial animal, metaphorically speaking.
In Mathew 24 Jesus warned the Apostles against, among other ills, false prophets and religious persecution:
You will be handed over for punishment and execution; all nations will hate you for your allegiance to me. At that time many will fall from their faith; they will betray one another and hate one another. Many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many; and as lawlessness spreads, the love of many will grow cold. But whoever endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the earth as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come.

This is a devotion for November 7, at the latter part of the Season after Pentecost. Advent is not far away from November 7–less than one month, in fact. (Advent can begin as early as November 27 and as late as December 3.) By November 7 the Sunday readings in the Revised Common Lectionary have taken a dark turn.
Yet, in the darkness of the tail end of Ordinary Time there is hope. Yes, Jeremiah suffered greatly, but God proved him correct. And nobody who tried to kill the prophet succeeded. Yes, sometimes there is persecution for following Jesus, but God still wins in the end. And God is faithful to the faithful, some of whom will lose their bodies in service to God but none of whom will lose their souls thereby. And Advent is around the corner. Christmas will follow. The summary of the hope of which I write is the Sovereignty of God.
