Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, son of Jesse, the oracle of the man whom God exalted, the anointed of the God of Jacob, the favorite of the Strong One of Israel:
The spirit of the LORD speaks through me,
his word is upon my tongue.
The God of Israel has spoken,
the Rock of Israel has said to me:
One who rules over people justly,
ruling in the fear of God,
is like the light of morning,
like the sun rising on a cloudless morning,
gleaming from the rain on the grassy land.
Is not my house like this with God?

My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.
Pilate asked him,
So you are a king?
Jesus answered,
You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.
The Collect:
Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. God’s ways and those dominant in many societies contradict each other. Look around. Listen. Pay attention. Then consider the following:
- The first will be last and the last will be first.
- The person who serves is the greatest of all.
- The Beatitudes in the Gospel of Matthew
- The Beatitudes and Woes in the Gospel of Luke
- This Sunday’s readings from Revelation and John
This is Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday in the Western Church year. The next Sunday will inaugurate Advent, the time of preparation for Christmas. Already we read of the return of Christ, which is par for the course at this time in the Western Church year. Only God knows the details of the parousia, so do not believe anyone who claims to have worked them out. Unfortunately, such alleged experts have given books such as Daniel and Revelation a bad name among many Christians and others.
I have no obsession with matters eschatological, but neither do I find Daniel and Revelation frightening or intimidating. They are dense, but that fact creates a challenge. I can deal effectively with a challenge, or at least try to do so. My main task as a Christian, however, is to follow Jesus, not to fixate on the seven seals or the four horsemen of the apocalypse. I do not look forward to the end of the world. Rather, I seek to leave my corner of the world better than I found it. How can I function as a divine agent so that God’s order will become more evident in the world, or at least my corner of it? How can I, for example, help those who mourn to laugh, those who hunger to have their fill, those who weep to rejoice, and those who seek God to find God? How may I serve God most effectively and show Jesus to those whom I encounter? These are my responsibilities; prophesy conferences are irrelevant.

1 Samuel 1:1-20 (Revised Standard Version–Second Catholic Edition):
There was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim of the hill country of Ephraim, whose name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. He had two wives; the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other was Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
Now this man used to go up year by year from his city to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the LORD. On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Penninah his wife and to all her sons and daughters; and, although he loved Hannah, he would give Hannah only one portion, because the LORD had closed her womb. So it went on year by year; as often she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. And Elkanah, her husband, said to her,
Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?
After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. And she vowed a vow and said,
O LORD of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your maidservant, but will give to your maidservant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.
As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard; therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman. And Eli said to her,
How long will you be drunken? Put away your wine from you.
But Hannah answered,
No, my lord, I am a woman sorely troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out of my soul before the LORD. Do not regard your maidservant as a base woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.
Then Eli answered,
Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have made to him.
And she said,
Let your maidservant find favor in your eyes.
Then the woman went her way and ate, and her countenance was no longer sad.
They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her; and in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said,
I have asked him of the LORD.

My heart exults in the LORD,
in the LORD I now hold my head high;

The Lord spoke to Daniel in a vision and said,
At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.

This is the covenant that I will make with them

I will put my laws on their hearts,

Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?

Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, “I am he!” and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs.

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. The church year is almost over, with one Sunday remaining in Year B and Advent, Year C, starting one week after that. (I am, by the way, typing these words almost one year ahead of Proper 28, Year B, and two days ahead of Proper 28, Year A. I seem to have jumped ahead in my devotional writing a few months ago.) Anyhow, by this time each church year, some Sunday readings have become apocalyptic. We see this in the lessons from Hebrews, Mark, and Daniel. The reading from Mark 13 speaks of the end of the Temple system and the coming of Roman imperial wrath over a Jewish rebellion. The writing of the Gospel of Mark occurred somewhere in the vicinity of the First Jewish War and the year 70 C.E., a fact which certainly influenced the telling of the contents of Mark 13:1-8. We humans tell the past through the lens of our present. Yet apocalypses need not be entirely dark; there is hope in Daniel 12:1-3.
That said, I prefer to focus on one verse:
We ought to see how each of us may best arouse others to love and active goodness.–Hebrews 10:24, Revised English Bible
The New Revised Standard Version offers this translation:
And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds….
J. B. Phillips, in the 1972 revision of The New Testament in Modern English, renders that verse as follows:
…and let us think of one another and how we can encourage each other to love and do good deeds.
And the New Jerusalem Bible offers this lovely phrasing:
Let us be concerned for each other, to stir a response in love and good works.
Many people seek to humiliate others, shout others down, or do violence to them. This does not improve society. I wonder how much better society would be if more people competed with each other to perform good deeds, such as feeding others or helping others become what they ought to be. Good works, the Bible tells us, are important. This principle runs through Judaism and Christianity, as evident in the following:
- the commandment to love one’s neighbor as oneself
- the Golden Rule.
And let us not forget the Golden Rule, 1 Corinthians 13, the Letter of James, Titus 2:14, and the life of Jesus.
So, instead of trying to demonstrate orthodoxy by arguing about theology, may we demonstrate orthopraxy by acting affirmatively from our faith. Then, when someone wants to know why we do what we do, our words will have force. A member of my congregation tells a true story about the aftermath of a natural disaster in Virginia years ago. A group of Mennonites traveled to the affected area, where they spent their time working to help the people there. They did this until they had done all that they could. Then the Mennonites returned to their home. Some locals, impressed by the Mennonites, wanted to know more about those helpful people. There is now a Mennonite presence in that area; locals demanded it.

She went and did as Elijah had spoken, and she and he and her household had food for a long time. The jar of flour did not give out, nor did the jug of oil fail, just as the LORD had spoken through Elijah.

Praise the LORD, O my soul!
I will praise the LORD as long as I live;

Hebrews 9:24-28 (Revised Standard Version–Second Catholic Edition):
For Christ has entered , not into a sanctuary made with hands, a copy of the true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the Holy Place yearly with blood not his own; for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all for the end of the age to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for men to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly awaiting him.

There was a large crowd listening eagerly. As he taught them, he said,
Beware of the scribes, who love to walk up and down in long robes and be greeted respectfully in the street, and to have the chief seats in synagogues and places of honour at feasts. Those who eat up the property of widows, while for appearance’s sake they say long prayers, will receive a sentence all the more severe.
As he was sitting opposite the temple treasury, he watched the people dropping their money into the chest. Many rich people were putting in large amounts. Presently there came a poor widow who dropped in two tiny coins, together worth a penny. He called his disciples to him and said,
Truly I tell you: this poor widow has given more than all those giving to the treasury; for the others who have given had more than enough, but she, with less than enough, has given all that she had to live on.
The Collect:
O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Widows were among the most vulnerable members of society in Biblical times. Their societies, being patriarchal, placed most women in subservient and economically dependent statuses. A widow needed a man–perhaps her son or another relative–to care for her.
This Sunday we read two stories of God providing for widows, whether via a man or a direct miracle. And, in Mark 12, a widow pays an offering she cannot afford. I have covered that story in a post (a link to which I have provided) already. So, with a minimum of repetition, I propose that Jesus probably lamented her sacrifice. That should have been food money, not an offering the Temple authorities would not have missed. I hope that God provided for that faithful widow.
Consider the scene from Mark 12. It was Holy Week, so Jesus was a few days away from dying, something he had to do. The widow did something she thought she had to do because the religious authorities said so. Yet it was unnecessary, and she did need to eat. The major difference between the two sacrifices I choose to emphasize now is that our Lord’s sacrifice was necessary; the widow’s was not. Yet they shared a common factor: Temple authorities played large role in both of them.
May we read these stories, digest them, and inwardly digest them. Accordingly, may we help the vulnerable, as we are able, and refrain from imposing needless burdens upon others.

In the days when the chieftains ruled, there was a famine in the land; and a man of Bethlehem in Judah, with his wife and two sons, went to reside in the country of Moab. The man’s name was Elimelech, his wife’s name was Naomi, and his two sons were named Mahlon and Chilion–Ephrathites of Bethlehem in Judah. They came to the country of Moab and remained there.
Elimelech, Naomi’s husband, died; and she was left with her two sons. They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth, and they lived there about ten years. Then those two–Mahlon and Chilion–also died; so the woman was left without her two sons and without her husband.
She started out with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab; for in the country of Moab she had heard that the LORD had taken note of His people and given them food. Accompanied by her two daughters-in-law, she left the place where she had been living; and they set out on the road back to the land of Judah.
But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law,
Turn back, each of you to her mother’s house. May the LORD deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me! May the LORD grant that each of you find security in the house of a husband!
And she kissed them farewell. They broke into weeping, and said to her,
No, we will return with you to your people.
But Naomi replied,
Turn back, my daughters! Why should you go with me? Have I any more sons in my body who might be husbands for you? Turn back, my daughters, for I am too old to be married. Even if I thought there was hope for me, even if I were married tonight, and I also bore sons, should you wait for them to grow up? Should you on their account debar yourselves from marriage? Oh no, my daughters! My lot is far more bitter than yours, for the hand of the LORD has struck out against me.
They broke into weeping again, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law farewell. But Ruth clung to her. So she said,
See, your sister-in-law has returned to her people and her gods. Go follow your sister-in-law.
But Ruth replied,
Do not urge me to leave you, to turn back and not follow you. For wherever you go, I will go; wherever you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. Thus and more may the LORD do to me if anything but death parts me from you.
When [Naomi] saw how determined she was to go with her, she ceased to argue with her; and the two went on until they reached Bethlehem.
When they arrived in Bethlehem, the whole city buzzed with excitement over them. The women said,
Can this be Naomi?
She replied,
Do not call me Naomi. Call me Mara, for Shaddai has made my lot very bitter. I went away full, and the LORD has brought me back empty. How can you call me Naomi, when the LORD has brought me back empty. How can you call me Naomi, when the LORD has dealt harshly with me, when Shaddai has brought misfortune upon me!
Thus Naomi returned from the country of Moab; she returned with her daughter-in-law Ruth the Moabite. They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
Psalm 146 (1979 Book of Common Prayer):

Praise the LORD, O my soul!
I will praise the LORD as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.
2 Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child of earth,
for there is not help in them.

The context for this Sunday’s reading from Mark is Holy Week; Jesus will die soon. This places the statement about the greatest commandments in a certain light and helps explain the lectionary committee’s decision to pair Hebrews 9:11-14 with Mark 12:28-34. And Jesus pulled the two greatest commandments from the Law of Moses–Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Leviticus 19:18, to be precise. Our Lord also agreed with his elder (and deceased) contemporary, Rabbi Hillel, on the question of the summary of the Law of Moses.
There are types of love in the Bible, and we see some of the best representatives of love in this Sunday’s readings. A daughter-in-law remains loyal to her mother-in-law. We read of the commandments to love God fully and our neighbors as ourselves, and of the depth of God’s love for us. I must add something else here to augment that thought. I write devotions in sequence, according to lectionaries (more or less). Very recently I wrote a devotion on Ephesians 5, which, while discussing marriage, commands the husband to love his wife. The text speaks of the two as one flesh:
He who loves his wife loves himself.–Ephesians 5:28b, New Revised Standard Version
We will love ourselves most or all of the time, unless we loathe ourselves, as some do. I suspect, though, that egotism is more rampant than self-loathing. So the main spiritual task for most of us is to place ourselves in proper context–not superior to others in the eyes of God–and to act compassionately toward others, as if toward ourselves. We are not isolated from others; what one does affects others. Yes, we are separate and unique in body and personality, but no, we are not isolated from others even in these matters. We have the power to build people up or to tear them down; may we, for the common good and the love of God, do the former, not the latter.

The theme for Proper 25, Year B, is restoration. Job, who had lost so much, got much more back. Descendants of the original Judean exiles would return to their ancestral homeland. And a blind man sought and received his sight back in the last healing by Jesus recorded in the Gospel of Mark.
Blindness was common in the ancient world, and it resulted from various causes. It was, in Jewish custom of the time, a ritual blemish, rendering one unfit to serve as a priest (Leviticus 21:18). And a blind animal was not suitable for ritual sacrifice (Leviticus 22:22 and Deuteronomy 15:21). So the blind man was, in the estimation of many people in his culture, defective, perhaps even punished by God. That must have taken an emotional toll on the man. Yet the Law (in Leviticus 19:14) forbade placing an obstacle in the way of the blind, so those who told the blind man to be quiet violated the Law of Moses.
Healing stories involving Jesus are about more than correcting the physical, emotional, and psychological disorders of people. They also speak of the restoration to society. The blind man no longer had a ritual blemish; he was no longer allegedly defective or punished by God.
As I write these words, I belong to a culture which considers itself fairly enlightened. It is, in many ways. We even have the Americans with Disabilities Act. And, based on the architecture of certain church buildings in which I have worshiped, I recognize a lack of concern for handicapped access in the late 1800s and early 1900s yet a keen attention to this issue in structures from more recent decades. Yet the disabled still face many challenges in getting from Point A to Point B, entering many buildings, and using many restrooms. Our lack of concern for them forces many of them to the margins; we are not as enlightened as we like to think we are.
Jesus restored people to society; we ought to do the same, as we are able.

Hebrews 5:1-10 (Revised Standard Version–Second Catholic Edition):
For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was.

There is no one-size-fits-all explanation for the causation of suffering that is also accurate. Job’s alleged friends thought there was one, and they spent much of the Book of Job repeating it and pestering Job.
You must have sinned,
they said,
and God must be disciplining you.
The story within the Book of Job contradicts this point of view, as does New Testament theology of the suffering of Jesus. Sometimes we suffer the consequences of our actions; other times we suffer because of what others have done. And, quite frustratingly, sometimes we cannot understand why we are suffering; there is no reason which is apparent to us.
Life brings us circumstances which are more complicated than pat answers and theological statements which fit onto bumper stickers. If we have an inadequate theology, life will, in time, expose this reality. The late J. B. Phillips wrote a profound little book, Your God is Too Small. He was correct; many Christians carry insufficient God concepts in their heads.
I do not profess to be a great spiritual master, but I do try to catch myself in great errors and endeavor not to repeat them–with mixed results. I try, for example, to have a sufficient God concept, to admit that the mystery of God exceeds my potential for full understanding. I can know certain things for sure, but most of the reality of God remains hidden from me. I try to embrace the ambiguity of not knowing, and so to live comfortably with the forever unanswered questions. God is God, and I am not. So be it. Blessed be God.

For men it is impossible, but not for God; everything is possible for God.

Job sought God and, in Chapter 23, did not find him. In the next chapter he complained about rampant injustice, a subject which also vexed the prophet Amos. The rich man in Mark 10 also sought God, yet his attachment to his wealth got in the way.
Do not rely on your money and say, “This makes me sufficient.”
Do not yield to every impulse you can gratify
or follow the desires of your heart.
Do not say, “I have no master”;
the Lord, you may be sure, will call you to account.
–Sirach (Ecclesiasticus) 5:1-3, Revised English Bible
Both economic injustice and idolization of wealth are sins which go hand-in-hand. Indeed, the idolization of wealth and one’s corresponding social status can lead to more economic injustice by way of Social Darwinism, which is an unfortunate and misleading label, for Darwin wrote about animal species, not human socio-economic status. It is easier to cling to wealth in lieu of God when one has much money than when one is quite poor, but both the rich and the poor can cling to a great variety of false security blankets.
We–regardless of status–need to have just one security blanket.
As the author of Hebrews reminds us, we can
approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.–4:16, New Revised Standard Version
Our worthiness is in Christ, who died by an unjust act and was therefore acquainted with human inhumanity. So, where is God in the midst of injustice? God is in the midst of if with us, suffering with us. God, who identifies and suffers with us, is our legitimate security blanket.

One day the heavenly beings came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD. The LORD said to Satan,
Where have you come from?
Satan answered the LORD,
From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.
The LORD said to Satan,
Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil. He still persists in his integrity, although you incited me against him, to destroy him for no reason.
Then Satan answered the LORD,
Skin for skin! All that people have they will give to save their lives. But stretch out your hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.

Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?
The question was put to test him. He responded by asking,

Moses permitted a man to divorce his wife by a certificate of dismissal.

It was because of your stubbornness that he made this rule for you. But in the beginning, at the creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘That is why a man leaves his father and mother, and is united to his wife, and the two become one flesh.’ It follows that they are no longer two individuals: they are one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate.
When they were indoors again, the disciples questioned him about this. He said to them,
Whoever divorces his wife and remarries commits adultery against her; so too, if she divorces her husband and remarries, she commits adultery.
They brought children for him to touch. The disciples rebuked them, but when Jesus saw it he was indignant, and said to them,
Let the children come to me; do not try to stop them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you: whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.
And he put his arms round them, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Easy answers for the problem of suffering prove inadequate, as the Book of Job demonstrates. Not all suffering flows from one’s sins. And the crucifixion of Jesus provides more refutation of the arguments of Bildad, Eliphaz, Zophar, and Elihu. Jesus was the best man (and far more) ever, yet ye suffered greatly. He was, in fact, a scapegoat. Consider John 11:47-50, verses 49 and 50 of which follow. Caiaphas is speaking:
You have no grasp of the situation at all; you do not realize that it is more to your interest that one man should die for the people, than that the whole nation should be destroyed. (Revised English Bible, 1989)
We still scapegoat people, some of whom are not entirely innocent. In so doing we let guilty people off the hook. And, when we scapegoat the wholly innocent, we cause needless suffering. Sometimes people suffer because of the sins of others. May we, by grace, find forgiveness for the suffering we inflict on others and desist forever from causing harm to others, for, as we read in Romans 13:9-10:
The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not covet,” and other commandments there may be, are all summed up in the one rule, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love cannot wrong a neighbour; therefore love is the fulfilment of the law. (Revised English Bible, 1989)
I write these words on October 27, 2011. A few years ago, I designated October 27 as the Feast of the Victims of the Salem Witch Trials (http://neatnik2009.wordpress.com/2009/09/02/feast-of-the-victims-of-the-salem-witch-trials-october-27/), so to write against scapegoating on this day is more appropriate than on some other occasions, not that there is a bad time to condemn that practice.

What is your petition, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your request? Even to the half of my kingdom, it shall be fulfilled.

If I have won your favor, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me– that is my petition– and the lives of my people– that is my request. For we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated. If we had been sold merely as slaves, men and women, I would have held my peace; but no enemy can compensate for this damage to the king.

James 5:13-20 (Revised English Bible):
Is anyone among you in trouble? Let him pray. Is anyone in good heart? Let him sing praises. Is one of you ill? Let him send for the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord; the prayer offered in faith will heal the sick man, the Lord will restore him to health, and if he has committed sins they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. A good man’s prayer is very powerful and effective. Elijah was a man just like us; yet when he prayed fervently that there should be no rain, the land had no rain for three and a half years; when he prayed again, the rain poured down and the land bore crops once more.
My friends, if one of you strays from the truth and another succeeds in bringing him back, you may be sure of this: the one who brings a sinner back from his erring ways will be rescuing a soul from death and cancelling a multitude of sins.
GOSPEL READING
Mark 9:38-41 (Revised English Bible):
John said to him,
Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and as he was not one of us, we tried to stop him.
Jesus said,
Do not stop him, for no one who performs a miracle in my name will be able the next moment to speak evil of me. He is not against us is on our side. Truly I tell you: whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because you are followers of the Messiah will certainly not go unrewarded.
If anyone causes the downfall of one of these little ones who believe, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone around his neck. If your hand causes your downfall, cut if off; it is better for you to enter into life maimed than to keep both hands and go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. If your foot causes your downfall, cut if off; it is better to enter into life crippled than to keep both your feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes your downfall, tear it out; it is better to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than to keep both eyes and be thrown into hell, where the devouring worm never dies and the fire is never quenched.
Everyone will be salted with fire.
Salt is good; but if the salt loses its saltness, how will you season it?
You must have salt within yourselves, and be at peace with one another.
The Collect:
O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to obtain your promises, may become partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

We are responsible for ourselves and for others. That is the theme which unifies the readings for Proper 21, Year B.
We begin with the options for the first reading. Haman had plotted to destroy the Jews, and had seemed to be near achieving success. Yet the intervention–at the risk of her own life–of Queen Esther foiled Haman’s evil plans. And what about Numbers 11? Israelites, bored with the monotony of manna (probably crystalized insect excrement), complained about the lack of meat. If one reads more than the assigned portions of this chapter, one finds that they got meat until they stood hip-deep in quails. As some grammatically-challenged people might have said,
That’ll learn ’em.
In the meantime, Moses complained to God that the burden of leadership was too heavy for him to bear alone. So he got a council of seventy elders to help. One moral of the story, I suppose, is to be careful about one’s complaints to God.
James and Jesus, the latter in Mark, remind us in positive and negative terms of the principle that we are responsible for each other spiritually. And, in Mark, we read some hyperbolic language about removing one’s own stumbling blocks. Our Lord did not advocate mutilation. Rather, the principle is simple and not unique to Mark 9: Whatever stands between you and God, get rid of it. Besides, how can you avoid being a stumbling block to others if you are so severely spiritually errant? Can the blind lead the blind to safety? What we do affects others. What we do not do affects others.
May we act responsible, whether alone or collectively.

FIRST READING AND PSALM: OPTION #1
Wisdom of Solomon 1:16-2:1, 12-24 (New Revised Standard Version):
But the ungodly by their words and deeds summoned death;
considering him a friend, they pined away
and made a covenant with him,
because they are fit to belong to his company.
For they reasoned unsoundly, saying to themselves,
Short and sorrowful is our life,
and there is no remedy when a life comes to its end,
and no one has been known to return from Hades….
Let us lie in wait for the righteous man,
because he is inconvenient to us and opposes our actions;
he reproaches us for sins against the law,
and accuses of us sins against our training.
He professes to have knowledge of God,
and calls himself a child of the Lord.

What causes fighting and quarrels among you? Is not their origin the appetites that war in your bodies? You want something and cannot have it; so you commit murder.
–James 4:20, New Revised Standard Version
Jesus was a great man–and far more than that. He, as a historical figure, obviously proved sufficiently threatening to the authorities of his time and place that the Roman Empire executed him via crucifixion, a method reserved for the allegedly worst of the worst. This was execution as a means of making an example of someone; “Do not do what he did,” the Empire said by killing a man in this fashion in public. Jeremiah also faced threats to his life due to his obedience to God; the prophet died in exile. Jesus and Jeremiah were, in the words of the unrighteous in the Wisdom of Solomon, “inconvenient.”
I have little to write this time, for much commentary on the texts, which speak clearly for themselves, is superfluous. I do have this to add, however: The Jesus of my childhood Sunday School classes was a nice, smiling man whom animals depicted in posters and the Children’s Living Bible adored. But being nice did not lead to his crucifixion. I grew up with an inadequate, safe, domesticated, and acceptable Jesus–a Jesus who bore little resemblance to the actual figure. The real Jesus was a dangerous man who associated with social outcasts, notorious sinners, and Roman collaborators. He challenged the religious establishment and disturbed the peace. He still challenges our comfort zones. As a cliche tells us, the Gospel comforts the afflicted and afflicts the comfortable.
Certain people in authority decided that Jesus had to die for the common good for for the sake of convenience–mostly for the latter. So he became a scapegoat. These men wanted the status quo ante, and Jesus not only rocked the boat but sank it. So they killed him through a perversion of law. It was judicial execution.
May we who claim the label “Christian” realize whom we follow. Then may we, informed by our Lord’s example, rededicate ourselves to our spiritual vocations.
